Understanding the Signs
General Guidance
The following guide explains common UK level crossing signs. The specific signs present can vary by location. This guidance applies in England, Scotland, and Wales.
Automatic Half-Barrier Crossings
This is the sequence of events you must follow when approaching an automatic half-barrier crossing:
- 1.Amber Light & Alarm: A steady amber light appears and an audible alarm begins. You must prepare to stop.
- 2.Flashing Red Lights: The lights turn to flashing red. You MUST STOP completely before the stop line.
- 3.Barriers Lower: The barriers will lower while the red lights continue to flash. The audible alarm might stop at this point.
- 4.Second Train Warning: If another train is approaching, the barriers will stay down and the lights will keep flashing. Do not proceed until the barriers are fully up and the lights have gone out.
